Virtual Program - Presented by Rich Rosenthal, President of North Jersey Civil War Round Table.
To enforce President Lincoln's administration's blockade against the Confederacy to cut off all trade with the North, on Dec. 17, 1862, General Grant issued Infamous Order No. 11 which stated, "The Jews, as a class, violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasure Department, and also Department orders, are hereby expelled from the Department."
Judah P. Benjamin was Jefferson Davis's right hand man, a politically powerful and important Jew of the 19th century-he was also widely hated in the North. Yet, he was a US Senator, the first Jew nominated to the US Supreme Court; and served in the Confederacy as Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War.
